Crop Art and Other Earthworks
Published in Paperback by Harry N Abrams (March, 1994)
Authors: Stan Herd and Stanley J. Herd
Average review score:

Herd is a true pioneer for this form of art
This is a wonderful book filled with breathtaking color images, each photo a piece of art in itself. Stan is a pioneer of this type of art form. Many people are emulating his work today, using computers or photography. You can find his work mentioned in several other books such as "Earth Works and Beyond" by Beardsley. Many of the images in the book can be found at his web site. All in all it's a great book that your coffee table can't do without!

The Crossword Answer Book
Published in Hardcover by Times Books (May, 1996)
Authors: Stanley Newman and Daniel Stark
Average review score:

Just What You're Looking For
This is exactly what you'd expect. You've got a couple of letters and need an answer, they're all here. Granted, that's a bit to look through, but desperate times and all that. I found this book particularly good for crossword construction, if you're into that sort of thing.

Current Therapy in Vascular Surgery
Published in Hardcover by Mosby (15 January, 2001)
Authors: Calvin B., Md. Ernst, James C., MD Stanley, and Mosby
Average review score:

Current Therapy in Vascular Surgery
An excellent clinical text specifically designed for the chief of the vascular service or fellow. Fortunately, the title listed is incorrect and there is very little about "colon therapy"

The Custom of the Castle: From Malory to Macbeth
Published in Hardcover by University of California Press (December, 1996)
Author: Charles Stanley Ross
Average review score:

Amazon has the wrong date and price. Call 1800UCBOOKS.
This is a book about love, violence, the outsider against society: the forbidden love of Tristan and Isolde, the problem violence in Boiardo's Orlando in Love, Ariosto's analysis of women and society, Spenser in Ireland, and Shakespeare's use of the old romance trope of the custom of the castle.

Dawson City Seven
Published in Paperback by Goose Lane Editions (August, 1994)
Author: Don Reddick
Average review score:

Best hockey fiction ever!
When my father mentioned the book over Christmas a couple years back, he was taken aback by my rattling off of facts about the famous Dawson City Cup challenge around the turn of the century. I read his copy that night in a rush, and it is the finest work of hockey fiction ever. Reddick stands with Ken Dryden as the most evocative hockey writer living. I have an autographed copy of my own now, and treasure it highly.

The Day the Ants Got Really Mad (Scaredy Cats , No 2)
Published in Paperback by Aladdin Library (April, 1996)
Authors: George Edward Stanley and Sal Murdocca
Average review score:

Ants in your pants?
My first grader and his friend both checked out this book and couldn't put it down. They are both good readers and loved it. It is hard to find something that boys this age find exciting, but this was it. They read the whole book in a day. I had to see what was so neat about it so I read it and also enjoyed it. A great beginning chapter book for kids. They can't wait to read the other scaredy cats books.

De Rervm Natvra: Libri Sex
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Wisconsin Pr (December, 1942)
Authors: Titus Lucretius Carus, Stanley Barney Smith, William E. Leonard, and Willliam Ellery Leonard
Average review score:

The best Lucretius
Lucretius isn't an author most come across, but nevertheless the DE RERVM NATVRA is truly a classic. In it he explains his version of epicureanism, taken from Epicurus and tweaked by Lucretius himself. Don't think our word 'epicurean' and this epicureanism are the same thing: epicurean has taken on a set of meanings that usually aren't present in the early philosophy, or in Lucretius's laying-out of it. Epicureanism should appeal to moderns as a very scientific view of the universe (L. offers scientific explanations of natural phaenomena, and isn't afraid to suspend judgement), including early atomic theory. On the other hand, the poetry and storytelling are moving. It is philosophy rimmed with the honey of poetry (as Lucretius puts it himself). As per this edition, it's pricey, but well worth it to completely understand the poet. The book itself is handsome and just the right size, and layed out well. The commentary is actually useful, unlike so many classical commentaries. It's advanced, but doesn't neglect or take for granted too much. At the same time, it doesn't concentrate on matters with a specialistic or only tenuous connection to the poem. In all, this is the place to study Lucretius, and to read a beautiful poem containing a beautiful (because thoughtful and insightful) philosophy.

Death in Venice & A Man and His Dog/Der Tod in Venedig & Herr Und Hund
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (June, 2001)
Authors: Thomas Mann and Stanley Appelbaum
Average review score:

Seems presumptuous to review
DiV is one of my favourite books, and an acknowledged masterpiece. This has translations of facing pages, for the aid of those (like me) who would find the German a bit too tough on its own.

Death's Railway: A Merchant Mariner POW on the River Kwai
Published in Paperback by Glencannon Press (June, 2002)
Author: Gerald Reminick
Average review score:

Yet another piece of perfection
I was one of the first individuals to buy this book as I couldn't wait for it's publication. I just finished reading it and I must say that the author again has written a masterpiece. Mr. Reminick, thanks again for your incisive prose and inside view of history. Love it.
